A Stinky But Convenient Design Choice
We’re familiar with the following scenario: you finally get into bed after a long day and you’ve just settled yourself in all comfortable when all of a sudden, nature calls and you have to use the restroom. Now what?
The person who designed this bedroom thought that this would be the perfect solution to the problem. However, they did not think about the fact that having a toilet so close to the bed may lead to some unpleasant odors. Definitely stock up on air freshener!
A Beautiful Balcony, Just For Show
Balconies are one of the most desirable additions to any home. There’s nothing like taking your morning coffee out to the balcony and basking in the warmth of the sun. Have guests over for meals out on there is also great fun.
However, when building a balcony, it’s pretty important to remember to build an opening that will allow you to actually get to it. It seems as though whoever made this did not realize that there was no apartment attached to this balcony at all.
Hopefully Nobody Needs To Do Any Laundry
Many people have to place their washing machines (and sometimes even dryers) in the kitchen as there is not enough space in their home to put the appliance anywhere else. Such was the case in this home, but planning was not involved here.
Unfortunately, anyone that wishes to wash their clothes in this home will have to stand in line behind the person who is using the oven, as the two appliances cannot be used at the same time.
Maybe This Is Some Type Of Yoga Toilet
Ah, the porcelain throne. Many people spend a lot of quality time on it. They say that some of the greatest thoughts come to people who idly lingered while heeding nature’s call. Hey, at least the time spent there is not wasted!
Today, with cell phones, we don’t like to admit how many emails are sent while seated in the facilities. Unfortunately in this case, sitting comfortably is simply not an option. You better have been practicing your yoga splits if you want to use this toilet.
This Tap Certainly Looks Powerful
Few things in life are as frustrating as a sink or shower with very low water pressure. Have you ever tried washing your hands in a sink that’s barely eking out any water? Nothing is as annoying, especially when you’re in a rush.
On the other hand, sinks that have too much water pressure can be downright inconvenient as well. This sink is producing so much water that you’re guaranteed to make a huge mess no matter how careful you’re being.
This One Is Really Frustrating
Adequate storage space is one of the most important components of any home. If you do not have convenient and smart storage solutions, your life can quickly become cluttered, disorganized, and unnecessarily frustrating. Proper storage is absolutely crucial for everyone.
However, whoever planned out these bathroom drawers must have misplaced their measuring tape, as the placement has now rendered these drawers absolutely useless. This is an example of why planning and measuring are a vital part of the home renovation process.
Out Of The Fire, Into The Air
In order to feel safe in your home, it’s important to make sure that you are equipped with all of the safety protocols and tools you might need in case of an emergency situation. One common emergency is having a fire in the house.
On these occasions, having a fire escape is absolutely critical. However, having a fire escape that leads to nowhere like this one is pretty useless. You run the risk of escaping one life threatening situation and running straight into another.
So Many Stairs, Such Little Convenience
Having stairs in your apartment complex is pretty much unavoidable when you have multiple floors. While some apartment buildings are fancy enough to have an elevator, it’s always still a good idea to have stairs just in case you might need them.
We understand why architects may want to spruce up stairs in order to make them look nicer. However, when the design of the staircase makes it less convenient to get up and down to different floors, that’s when it becomes a problem.
Something Is A Little Off Here
Renovating a home is a stressful process. There are so many small details involved that you have to keep track of that you’re bound to overlook one or two throughout the whole ordeal. Hopefully these mistakes aren’t too costly.
Sadly, in this specific case, someone made the unfortunate mistake of installing the door completely upside down. You would think that having the number on the door would help indicate which way is right side up, but apparently that was not the case.
How To Make The Most Dangerous Sink Possible
Part of the idea of recruiting an architect or interior designer in order to help out when renovating your home is that they are familiar with all the ways in order to keep your home safe and structurally sound.
They can help avoid critical mistakes like this one. This sink is an absolute disaster waiting to happen. Whoever installed it was certainly not thinking about the fact that having an outlet directly below water could cause the whole house to end up engulfed in flames.
Out Of The Frying Pan, Into The Shower
Here’s yet another example of why it is always a good idea to enlist the help of a professional when renovating a home. This is especially true when you’re tight on space and want to maximize your square footage to the best of its potential.
There’s an old adage that goes something like “don’t poo where you chew.” We think that the same goes for showering. It’s alway best to keep your kitchen away from the space where you practice your hygiene rituals.
A Very Sad Looking Window
A lot of people don’t like staying in hotels because they just don’t feel homey or cozy enough. One thing that can help combat this feeling is having a nice window in the hotel room to let natural light in.
However, for whoever was staying in this particular Best Western, the window situation was anything but normal. We’re not sure what happened here exactly, but we can guarantee that no normal should be facing that angle. It really makes the building look very sad and droopy.
Trying A Little Too Hard
It goes without saying that having adequate walkways to and from your home is a crucial component of design. After all, what use is a house if you cannot get to it? Paving a path to the doorway seems obvious.
However, somebody missed the memo in this particular case. Getting into and out of this home is an obstacle course with dire consequences should you fall off the narrow walkway beams. They definitely should have consulted with a professional here.
How Many Staircases Exist Just For Looks?
Sometimes when we renovate a part of our home, we become attached to certain parts of it that way may need to eventually let go. While you might think that recycling something that was once used for decorative purposes is a good idea, sometimes that is not the case.
Here we see a perfect example of that. This home upgraded from a small staircase to a larger walkway that cuts across the whole yard. However, someone was too attached to the stairs and decided to leave them there, though they lead nowhere.
Perfect For A Flying Car Owner
While it’s good to upgrade and renovate your room in order to keep up with the changing time and technology, it’s important not to try to outpace the technological advancements. This may lead to changes that end up being useless.
For example, the person living in this house was sure that by 2020 we would have flying cars (or at the very least, functional hover boards). This garage would have been perfect for that, but sadly, cars are still very much rooted to the ground.
A Fairly Cozy Kitchen And Bathroom Combo
Many people who choose to live in crowded and expensive cities such as New York City and Tokyo are aware that they must make sacrifices in order to live in such cramped quarters. This leads to many strange architectural choices.
One example of this is this kitchen-shower combination. While it is true that this is the ultimate way to use every inch of a space, perhaps the combination of the two is not the best. After all, having your oven that close to your toilet can never be a good idea.
The Stairway To Nowhere
We’ve all heard the great Led Zeppelin classic song “Stairway to Heaven.” What you may not have heard of is the concept of a staircase to nowhere. That’s because that concept completely defeats the whole purpose of having a staircase.
Whoever planned out the layout of this home definitely did not realize that there was absolutely no space between the staircase and the wall it faces. Why would you do this? Just make the staircase a bit narrower!
Please Don’t Look In Here!
Windows are a crucial part of homes as they provide a source of natural light and are a great way to incorporate fresh air circulation into the house. While some windows are problematic when it comes to privacy, there are plenty of solutions.
One way to block peeping Toms from seeing into your home is to install curtains or blinds. However, the person who owns this home decided to take zero chances and lined the windows with bricks so that absolutely nobody could see in.
When Modern Art Meets Construction
Many people are not fans of modern art as they simply cannot see beyond the surface level and understand its significance. The same goes with modern stylistic choices when it comes to home design. This is definitely the case with this home.
While most people prefer that their windows will all be aligned with one another, this person preferred to take a more avant garde approach to exterior design for their house, with windows that all lean at different angles. It’s definitely an acquired taste.
You’d Better Not Hurry Out Of This Apartment
Having an apartment that’s not on the ground floor has many benefits. First of all, you don’t have to worry about many pests that like to live on the ground floor of buildings. Another benefit is potentially having a nice view.
However, all of this is useless if you don’t have a way to get in or out of the house safely. In this case, there’s not even a way in! The way out is also extremely dangerous. We’re not sure what the thought process was behind this design.
A Room Without A View
As we previously mentioned, having windows in your home or apartment is a great way to have a source of natural light and also fresh air. That being said, the fact is that many apartments unfortunately do not have light-facing windows.
However, if you do have the opportunity to have windows in the house, you definitely should. We’re not sure what the thought process was behind this window situation, but its poor design allows in very minimal light and air.
Just Don’t Look Too Hard
There’s a very popular trend on the rise right now that involves mixing and matching design styles from different periods of time and also different cultures. For example, any people are incorporating minimalistic Japanese elements into their homes for some variety.
While it’s great to mix in different style elements for a variated look, it’s also important to make sure that these elements are well incorporated. This is a great example of what not to do: don’t just put two different things together side by side and call it a day.
Another Stairway To Nowhere
Staircases, although sometimes can be decorative, have pretty much one purpose for existing. That purpose would be helping people get up and down from different areas easily. Therefore, you would think it would be pretty easy to design these structures.
However, it’s becoming clear that many people have missed the point of stairs altogether, as can be seen by this particular staircase. These are yet another set of stairs that lead absolutely nowhere, rendering them totally useless. What gives?
Plenty Of Natural Light In Here
Having a smaller home might mean having to get creative with fitting in everything that is needed within tight quarters. That also might mean having to be creative with the way you might divide up the rooms of the house.
While in theory this nice glass stained door seems like it would be a good dividing mechanism, perhaps a see-through item should not be used to block off the bathroom from the rest of the house, especially when there is still a gaping open space on the other side.
A Rollercoaster Drive
The daily commute can often become a very mundane and boring part of life. A lot of people try to take advantage of their commute time by listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or their favorite music. Meanwhile, others take more extreme measures.
This home owner decided that each day needs to begin with a bang, and has installed a rollercoaster element into their garage. Diving straight into the day is the way they want to start their mornings, but did they think about the tough climb back into the garage at the end of the day?
Another View From An Ugly Neighborhood
While all of us would love to live in beautiful neighborhoods filled with stunning architecture and beautifully designed gardens, in reality, many of us will have to go for whatever our paychecks will allow. That means that the view outside the window might not be what we want it to be.
One way to avoid having to look out the window and see the ugly neighborhood is to jump simply block it off altogether. This person loaded up bricks on his windows and is now blissfully ignorant of what’s going on outside.
Perhaps The Most Cramped Toilet Ever
When designing a home, it’s easy to forgo extra space for a bathroom. You might think to yourself, “well, I don’t really spend so much time in there anywhere, so why let it take up so much space?” However, it’s important not to exaggerate.
While you can cut out some extra space from a bathroom in order to make your room larger or even give yourself some more closet space, you have to make sure you still have enough room to get in and out of the bathroom!
While This Toilet Is Not Cramped Enough
As we mentioned, it’s crucial to have enough space in the bathroom in order to get in and out and also move around freely. However, it’s also important to keep in mind the opposite: don’t use up too much of your square footage!
While having a spacious bathroom is important, you don’t need to have too much space in there. That applies especially to having the toilet paper roll way too far out of reach from the toilet itself.
Doorknobs Are Great When You Can Use Them
We are all accustomed to reaching for the doorknob as close to the edge of the door as possible. It’s something we don’t even really think about. You know how it goes: “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
That applies to interior design as well. While you might think it’s a fun and creative idea to place a door handle in the middle of the door, it simply is not practical and may lead to unwanted confusion. Stick to the basics!
At Least It Still Works, Maybe?
Having a home office is a great and convenient way to get some work done and stay productive while at home. Studies show that having a designated space for working in your home will increase your productivity levels and help minimize distractions.
That being said, proximity to the bathroom is definitely a high priority for many people. This guy was really adamant about minimizing the space altogether and decided to install a bathroom right in there. We’re not sure how we feel about this one.
This One is Kind Of Mysterious
Here we go again. This staircase is very beautiful and was clearly inspired by great architectural works throughout history. However, beauty over functionality is a big problem with this staircase, just like others we have seen before it.
Once again, this puzzling staircase leads you straight into a solid wall, leaving us very confused. We’re really questioning the person who designed this one, since it really makes absolutely no sense to have such a beautiful staircase made for absolutely no real purpose.
Is This a Handbag, or a House?
Brand loyalty is a pretty recent concept but it has definitely taken over consumerist culture around the globe. Many people will purpose items solely because of the brand that has produced it, regardless of what they actually think of its design.
This person’s brand loyalty to Louis Vuitton is so fierce that they have even decided to paint their home with its signature “LV” design as a homage to the handbag company. We personally believe that solid colors are a better choice, but to each his own.
A Pretty Hazardous Error
One of the most important, if not the absolute most important, components of planning the design of a home in ensuring optimal safety. Having hazardous items stored safely and items that should not be near each other is very crucial.
For example, any item that expels water should be kept a safe distance away from an electrical item. Otherwise, you risk a seriously dangerous situation. This gutter tube is far too close to an electrical outlet. This is a really bad idea.
Why Buy A Window When You Could Use Two Doors?
When it comes to home design, one thing to always keep in your pocket is innovation, especially when you are running low on supplies. However, that does not necessarily apply to larger and critically important components of the house.
TexWhile using two windows in place of a door is quite innovative and creative, it might not necessarily be a good idea. Also, it must be extremely difficult to open both of the windows and get in and out of the house.
Only 1/3 Of A Toilet?
When it comes to renovating and designing a home that is on the smaller side, space saving solutions are the way to go. You might include sneaky storage underneath the bed and a table that folds away when it is not in use.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that these solutions should be both space efficient but also logically sound. While you do save some space with this kind of toiler, it is really practical? Who can use such a small toilet?
An Unwanted Visitor
As our home is often our safe space in the world, it is natural that most people would want to keep any intruders or unexpected guests. There are many ways to keep your home sage, ranging from alarms, to large fences, and strong locks.
However, these safety measures shouldn’t prevent even you from being able to go into or leave the home. While this big tree is rather formidable, it poses a serious problem for anyone who is parked inside of that garage.
Aren’t Balconies Meant For The View?
When it comes to do it yourself projects, commonly referred to as DIY projects, many people don’t realize how tricky they may be and how in over their heads they may be getting. This is especially true when it comes to home renovation DIYs.
Someone tried their best to build their very own balcony in this home, but didn’t realize that they were looking at the instruction manual upside down. At best, this could serve as a nice protection from rain and snow.
Nothing Like Columns In The Kitchen
Many people choose to purchase old homes and renovate them in order to save some money when investing in buying a house. While this is a good solution, it’s important to know what you’re doing and make sure the house is structurally sound.
This is especially important to make sure before you start knocking out walls and renovating the place. These people found out the hard way that they could not take out these annoying beams in the kitchen unless they want to run the risk of the whole house collapsing.
Dangerous Doorways, Volume 2
In every space that humans occupy, it is critical to have a fire exit in case an emergency situation should arise. It should go without saying, but the fire exit should lead to a safe space that allows people to get out of the building quickly.
Unfortunately, this fire exit poses a safety risk in itself. While it will definitely let you out of the building, you’ll be heading towards a very painful crash if you’re not ready to make an Olympic-level landing.
A Great Example of Alternative Toilets
When renovating a home, the costs of projects tend to be much higher than first anticipated. Problems may arise along the way and hidden costs due to mishaps will inflate the overall budget in many cases. There is one way around this.
Many times, home improvement stores will offer discounts on refurbished or slightly “off” products. While these aren’t the most visually pleasing, the hefty price decrease may be exactly what you were looking for. For example, this off-center toilet was a fraction of the price of a regular toilet.
Think Of The Possibilities!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to get your hands dirty and working on a home improvement or renovation project. The only thing we really would recommend is making sure you know what you’re doing or enlisting help from someone with experience.
Otherwise, you might be left with a kitchen that may be functionally alright, but ends up looking very awkward. This is the case in this kitchen, with a too-small island and strangely fitted cabinets. Just ask for help!
Don’t Bother Trying To Come In This Way
Space saving solutions do often mean having to make some sacrifices. Limited budgets will sometimes mean having to shelve some desired renovation projects. However, it’s important to try to plan in a smart way in order to avoid unsightly results.
Such was the case in this home. Their kitchen renovation was running low on the budget-side of things, and they could not afford to move the French door. So the project went on, and they decided to simply build on top of it.
You Could Probably Still Use This Dishwasher
Home appliances are one of humanity’s greatest inventions. They truly make all of our lives much easier and save us heaps of time. One of the best of these appliances is the dishwasher. It’s not only convenient, but actually uses less water than hand washing!
The only catch is that you need to make sure the dishwasher door can fully open and close so you can load it up all the way. While you could sneak some dishes into this cramped dishwasher, it’s not the ideal positioning.
This One Is Pretty Frustrating
We humans have a tendency to preferring things that are symmetrical as opposed to asymmetrical. We generally favor clean, straight lines over random designs. This holds true for home design, and especially when it comes to aligning the walls inside.
While this meeting of four walls does not necessarily pose a safety risk (but this homeowner should still consult with a professional about that), it is truly upsetting to look at. They were SO close to lining it all up, but just barely messed it up.
Duck, Duck, Duct
One of the most popular trends in interior design at the moment is having an exposed and industrial look in the house. This is especially popular to have in the kitchen. However, this look should definitely be intentional and not accidental.
It looks like this kitchen was just really poorly designed. This duct is not left there for decorative purposes. Whoever planned the layout of this kitchen simply did not care about covering up this unsightly duct that spans across the whole ceiling.
You Shall Not Pass
There’s truly something fascinating about a door that you cannot open. What secrets lie inside? There’s a reason why so many movies and stories take place after a character opens up a door that was supposed to be sealed off from them.
Curiosity will get the best of us. What could possibly be hiding behind this door? We guess we’ll never find out, as this staircase railing is completely blocking it off. How disappointing would it be if it was just full of cleaning supplies?
The World’s Safest Toilet Paper
An often underrated and overlooked portion of designing a bathroom is the location of the toilet paper holder. This might seem like a trivial detail to you, but you would be very wrong in thinking that. The location chosen is critical.
While having it too far away leads to obvious problems, having it too close to the sink runs the risk of getting the toilet paper wet and soggy. This person tried to avoid that problem, but now the toilet paper is totally out of reach.
Good Thing The Flush Is On The Side
It seems like many people do not take the proper amount of time to plan their bathroom layouts out thoroughly. While saving space is definitely high on the list of priorities, it should not come at the cost of practicality.
While it looks like this toilet is tucked away neatly into the crevice by the sink, there is one glaring problem. There’s no way to open the toilet in case problems arise, as it is totally blocked by the counter.
Reach Everything And Nothing At Once
The principles of organization and space saving are crucially important to understand during the process of renovating and planning out the layout of a home. Otherwise, you run the high risk of running into annoying problems later down the road.
While this kitchen has crammed in every single possible appliance and storage solution, it is also extremely cluttered. While everything seems like its within reach, this is actually an illusion, as there is no space to maneuver around at all.
Is This A Kitchen Or A Bathroom?
Studio apartments are a great solution for young professionals who would prefer to live alone rather than with roommates and do not have the need for large amounts of space. However, many studio apartments have very creative and sometimes strange space saving solutions.
In this particular space, it looks as though the planner could not decide whether this corner was the kitchen or the bathroom. Most likely, they want to use the same water source for the kitchen sink and the shower, but it looks very strange.
Hopefully, Nobody Needs That Oven Mitt
Planning and measuring are the most crucial aspects of planning out a renovation. Taking the extra few moments that it takes to properly measure out spaces and sizes of appliances will save you so much frustration in the future.
For example, had someone taken the time to plan properly, this oven/drawer disastrous situation could have been completely avoided. However, corners were cut in the process, and now corners are part of the problem. Hopefully nobody needs access to whatever is in that drawer.
This Doesn’t Even Seem THAT Practical
Properly planned out and carefully thought out space saving solutions can really elevate any space in the house. You should consider all of the options you might have to maximize your space in a safe and efficient way when renovating your home
However, try to avoid silly mistakes that come through poor planning. While having limited space means being creative, it really doesn’t mean that you need to have your shower and toilet directly next to your kitchen. This is definitely a health risk.
Is There A Car All The Way Up There?
Planning out the layout of a home really is not an easy task. This is probably why architects have to go through so much rigorous training. Not only is poor design not attractive to look at, it can also be downright dangerous.
This garage was really not well thought out. How is any car supposed to park in it or come out of it safely? The only explanation would be that these people were really hoping flying cars would be a thing very soon.
Two Cupboards, One Door
Many people think they could come up with the latest and greatest innovation, especially in the home renovation field. You should always run your ideas by other people before implementing them, so you can get a second opinion and evaluate how practical they are.
Some genius thought that they would cut down the cost of renovating his room by buying one door instead of two and alternating its use from one closet to the other. The problem is, one is always left exposed!
This Is Pretty Concerning!
The most important factor to take into consideration while renovating your home is that of safety. If your home is not safe, then there is no point in renovating it at all. The same goes for home decor and interior design.
While these antique swords are a great collector’s find, we really think that they could have been displayed somewhere else and not above a baby’s crib. The other solution is to put the baby’s crib literally anywhere but here.
Look At This Poor Fridge All By Itself
A recent and growing trend is to build your home in a way that hides appliances away from plain sight. Many people build their refrigerators directly into the cabinet in order to hide it away from everyone being able to see it.
However, there is no need to build a separate pod that hides the fridge from just one side. It creates an awkward corner that actually closes up the space instead of leaving it open and clean. This is a definite no.
Unclear Where This Door Leads To
Having a door in your home seems like an obvious no brainer. Planning out where it will go it quite an important step, since it will literally affect your everyday life. Improper placement of the door is a huge problem.
Take this door for example. It is very clear that nobody thought this process through. It is also very clear that nobody planned out or measured where it should go. Now, it’s a total safety hazard that cannot easily be fixed.
Just Paint Over It, It’s Fine
It is always a fun idea to renovate your home and make structural changes. Whether that’s knocking down walls or adding in more rooms, change is always a positive thing. However, it’s important to think about how you’ll adjust the rest of the home afterwards.
In this case, these homeowners decided to add a whole second level to their home. They did it by simply raising up the existing floor. What they didn’t think about was getting rid of the old front door. They simply painted over it!
This Fridge Is Almost Hidden
Here we see another attempt at following the trend on the rise of hiding the refrigerator by making it look like part of the kitchen cabinets. This trend does not seem to be going away anytime soon, and when done right, it can look great.
However, unfortunately this was not a job so well done. While most of it does a good job with blending into the rest of the theme of the kitchen, you can still definitely tell that it is a fridge.
A Risky Trip To The Bathroom
There’s nothing like quite having a sense of adventure in this life. Taking some risks and living on the edge is good for the soul. However, going to the bathroom definitely should not be an adventure. In fact, it shouldn’t be risky at all.
This toilet is located below a very precariously placed washing machine. Using this toilet is almost like playing Russian Roulette. You never know if you’re safe or not. We definitely think there could be a better configuration here.
