An Alternative Career Path

Before he became a basketball legend, Kobe pursued rapping as a career. In 1999 he signed a record deal with Sony Records. He recorded a song called “K.O.B.E”, which featured Tyra Banks. However, the song did not do particularly well, and so his album deal was eventually scrapped. He even met his future wife, Vanessa Laine, at a recording studio. She was a backup dancer in “G’d Up,” a Tha Eastsidaz music video.

Although his own musical career was short-lived, Kobe did make some notable appearances on other successful artists’ tracks. 3 years after he began his career in the NBA, he starred in a Destiny’s Child music video for their song “Bug A Boo.” In the video, you can see the girls run into a men’s locker room when they run into Kobe prepping for a game.
