Finding A Program
This is certainly the most intimidating part of the process. But it doesn’t have to be! The best thing you can do is research, research, research. Websites like Go Overseas and Go Abroad can help out greatly. Sift through all the options and see what draws you in. You can also check out Grassroots Volunteering, which is a great database of organizations by type, destination, cost, and duration. This will help you get a better sense of what you’re looking for and how realistic it is.
Construction Volunteering
There are plenty of construction volunteering opportunities all over the globe. Habitat For Humanity is of course a well known option to help people build homes around the world. Pencils of Promise helps build schools in areas that don’t have infrastructure and create life-changing educational opportunities.
Teaching Opportunities
Endless countries are constantly looking for English teachers to come teach both kids and adults the language. If you are TEFL qualified, that is certainly beneficial, but it is not a necessity. Organizations like Room to Read and Biblioworks help with fundraising and improving literacy.
Environmental Volunteering
Of course, issues are becoming more and more common. Access to clean water is becoming more and more scarce. There are organizations like Global Water Brigades that aim to help give access to clean water to developing countries.
Medical Volunteering
For those who are trained medically, you can quite literally be a lifesaver in many places abroad. Doctors, nurses, and dentists are especially needed, and you can get involved with the Red Cross and other organizations that help with placement.
Animal Volunteering
If you are an animal lover, you can get involved with organizations and safaris in Africa that are in need of help. You can work with endangered animals, elephants, and tortoises. Grassroots volunteering is another great resource to find opportunities.
