You can follow fashion trends throughout history by watching Hollywood stars and how they dress. Throughout all of the years of Hollywood there have been stars who have emerged in order to set trends that men and women everywhere would go on to follow. We’re going to look at 22 celebrities who left their mark on fashion by becoming style icons!
Audrey Hepburn
In the ’50s the largest project a woman would organize would be a kitchen remodeling ordeal. Hepburn was a huge blast of progress and feminism and she left her mark on fashion, as well. Look back to the ’60s and Hepburn’s little black dress — or LBD. She’s a Hollywood fashion icon through and through.
Lady Gaga
Speaking of women you would never catch worrying about kitchen remodeling or kitchen renovations — Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is known for her insane outfits but recently the popstar has been tailoring her outfits more sensibly of late. Gaga’s style illuminates confidence and stylistic prowess.
Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams is a famous actress who has shades of Grace Kelly in her style. Williams played Marilyn Monroe on screen, which turned out to be a great investment for her career. Williams utilizes sharp lines and modern cuts in order to accentuate the red carpet.
Diana Ross
Ross may not have name recognition for many teens but she was all that in the ’80s. As a famous pop star in a fashion-disaster era, Ross stood out for her flourishing gowns and out-sized wigs. Ross was a great investment for the Motown fashion scene. We’re glad that her talent was wasted poring over kitchen renovations and kitchen remodeling problems.
Taylor Swift
Swift is the biggest crossover artist on our list thanks to her ascent from country star to global icon. She’s got country chic down and you’d be wise to make an investment in stocks of anything fashion related she produces. T-Swizzle can do no wrong.
Grace Kelly
Go back in time and put all of your stocks in whatever Grace Kelly would wear. Kelly was preppy and elite without being snobbish in her outfit choices. Grace had a sophisticated style that was elegant, feminine, and empowering all at once. Yeah, she could be at a ball or working on kitchen renovations and we wouldn’t blink once.
Elizabeth Taylor
Taylor was absolutely fearless with how she dressed, especially during a time in which women were expected to be conservative and avoid risky ventures like acting or stocks. Taylor is a bonafide cinema legend thanks to her acting chops and extraordinary style of dress.
Rihanna
There is nobody else alive that can pull off the looks that Rihanna will showcase on the red carpet. Rihanna is as fearless with her clothing as she is her hair — always out to make a statement. Rihanna can go from Disney Princess to pop punkster in a heartbeat.
Beyonce
Beyonce resides on a different level than the rest of us mere mortals. She’s as talented as she is beautiful, and good gracious is she beautiful. Beyonce unveils strong yet uniquely feminine looks every time she takes to the stage. Beyonce is an all time great.
Jackie Kennedy
Jackie Onassis, the widow of President John F. Kennedy, was never afraid of showing off her fashion to the public. Kennedy changed how we look at conservative dress for public figures and she did it in glamorous fashion.
Rita Hayworth
Hayworth was Hollywood Glam before it was really a thing. She tore up the dance floor with stylish dresses and gigantic hair while looking elegant and powerful. Hayworth was such a vibrant star that she became Fred Astaire’s favorite dancing partner — a huge honor.
Emma Watson
Emma Watson is bringing back bold looks while staying remarkably true to herself. Styling herself as a feminist, Watson uses her fashion as an extension of her ideology. You can make a pretty strong comparison between Watson and Audrey Hepburn. It’s odd to say but we are currently watching Emma Watson bloom into one of the most powerful and influential women in Hollywood. That’s a pretty high honor for a former child star.
Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn was the beautiful face of fashion for her generation. Hepburn would employ uniquely American looks that seemed all at once risky and traditional. Katharine’s on screen fashion is probably the bigger statement versus her off screen look.
Blake Lively
When you are married to the Sexiest Man Alive, Ryan Reynolds, you have to hold your own in regards to fashion. Fortunately Blake Lively is a classic beauty with an affinity for perfect hemlines, plunging necklines, and a sort of restrained classical air. If it is an outfit then you can probably assume that Lively can pull it off. Screw it, she probably could pull off a garbage bag.
Miley Cyrus
You don’t get to be this loved, and hated, without striking a few of the right chords. Miley Cyrus went from Disney Child Star straight to Pop’s Bad Girl. Right now she is getting looked down on as a wild child but what we really see is the next Madonna.
Kim Kardashian
Love her or hate her, Kim Kardashian sets the bar for what passes in pop culture fashion. We don’t even have to reference her, ahem, breaking the internet in order to get our point across. Though Kim’s hated by a good portion of her onlookers — they are looking at her for a reason.
Madonna
Oh, we did mention Madonna — didn’t we? Madonna brought a whole new style of fashion to light: costume chic. Madonna has been grabbing headlines for decades thanks to her risky, raunchy, and absolutely captivating outfit choices.
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron calls to mind the classical beauty of Lauren Bacall. Theron is statuesque and almost robotic without losing any of her cool beauty. Theron can wow a room in a little black dress and she can stop anybody in their tracks with a glance.
Selena Gomez
Queen Selena is probably a more appropriate title at this point. Gomez has been riding a high for years now despite her own personal issues. Gomez sets the trend for teens everywhere whenever she steps into the public spotlight. Just take a look at Gomez dressed up in Marc Jacobs’ line in order to see what we’re talking about.
Mila Kunis
It seems lazy to categorize Mila Kunis as a fashion icon due to her Russian nationality, but it definitely plays a part. Kunis is dark and sumptuous while maintaining a sort of youthful vibrancy. Kunis works the dark, slim fitting dresses better than anyone else in Hollywood. Look at some old school Ava Gardner for a fashion doppelganger from back in the day.
Twiggy
She was working with an edge to her style far sooner than it was considered acceptable by pop culture. Twiggy’s rise in to the top of the U.K. fashion scene came thanks to her drawn on lashes and pseudo punk-alternative fashion. Twiggy retired from modeling back in the ’70s but her work is still giving off an edge to this day. You can even see how Twiggy affected fashion for men, as well.
Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe brought sexuality to the fashion industry with her dangerous curves and huge personality. Monroe brought luxury along with her rise to stardom and it seemed like nothing could stop her. Monroe’s most famously known for her shot on the street grate in The Seven Year Itch, but there is so much more that she has done to make a difference in the industry.
